News Bulletin- Park Improvement Projects

Forest Diversification
Five-hundred evergreen trees were recently planted in Rider Park. These trees were planted along the Katy Jane trail, Francis X. Kennedy trail, Cheryl’s trail and Park entrance road. Species of evergreens planted were white spruce, Black Hills spruce, Norway spruce, Canaan fir, Fraser fir and eastern white pine. The purpose of this planting is to help maintain a healthy diverse population of evergreen trees in the Park due to the loss of American hemlock trees from the elongate hemlock scale sometimes known as the fiorinia scale.

Yeagle Road Entrance
An improvement to the Yeagle Road entrance to Rider Park was made earlier this year to help neighborhood residents better access the Park. A trail kiosk was installed at this location showing the Park’s trail network. The Allegheny Ridge Trail from Yeagle Road is marked with orange trail markers. It joins the Katy Jane trail at the top of the mountain.

History
Rider Park is a gift of the late Thomas J. Rider to the residents of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Rider included a special request that the Sisters of Christian Charity and Divine Providence Hospital, now part of Susquehanna Health System, use the area for employee recreation and patient rehabilitation. He also provided funds for the maintenance of the park.

A noted businessman and civic leader, Mr. Rider strongly believed in the benefits of a life of community service. Rider Park is a fitting legacy. Located in Lycoming County, north of Warrensville, Pennsylvania, the park has over 867 acres of woodlands and meadows and is a tribute to a man whose life embodied a healthy balance of work, volunteerism and the enjoyment of recreation.
